Compagnie Maritime Nantaise has ordered a hybrid roro vessel from Guangzhou Shipyard International to support the logistics needs of Europe's space industry, with delivery due by 2030. No price was disclosed for the newbuild. The ship will combine conventional mechanical propulsion with three automated OceanWings rigid sails, alongside an optimised hull, advanced weather routing, greater automation and compatibility with biofuels. It has been designed primarily to carry launch vehicles, satellites and other sensitive industrial cargoes, including Vega-C components moving between Europe and the Guiana Space Centre, while also being capable of transporting oversized Ariane 6 equipment and other strategic aerospace cargoes. Cargo spaces will feature a large main roro deck, a dedicated compartment with controlled environmental conditions for space-related freight, and a flexible open deck. The order follows a strategic partnership signed in June between Compagnie Maritime Nantaise and Italian aerospace group Avio, building on more than 15 years of cooperation between the two companies. Marc-Antoine Girardet, president of Sogestran Group's maritime division, described the vessel as another milestone in the company's development of services for the European space sector. Compagnie Maritime Nantaise, part of Sogestran Group, currently operates four roros, one research vessel and six passenger launches.
