ESL Shipping has taken delivery of the final vessel in its Green Coaster series, completing a newbuilding programme aimed at reducing the environmental footprint of its dry bulk fleet. The delivery, reported on 8 September 2026, marks the conclusion of a project that has equipped the Finnish shipping company with a set of coasters designed around low-emission technology. The Green Coaster vessels have been built with battery-hybrid propulsion systems and onshore power connection capability, allowing the ships to draw electricity from shore supplies while in port and reduce reliance on auxiliary engines. These features are intended to cut fuel consumption and associated emissions during both sea passages and port calls, reflecting a broader push across the short-sea and bulk carrier segment to adopt hybrid and electrified solutions. According to TrustedDocks orderbook data, the order was placed on 1 October 2024 with China Merchants Industry Holdings (CMIH Group) for a 17,000 dwt bulk carrier, and the delivered vessel has been identified as the CMJL Nanjing (IMO 1091757), with delivery recorded from 8 September 2026, consistent with the reported handover date. ESL Shipping has positioned the Green Coaster programme as part of its wider strategy to decarbonise cargo transport in the Baltic Sea region, where the company operates services carrying bulk commodities such as biomass, minerals and industrial raw materials. The completion of the series adds to the operator's fleet of vessels equipped with emissions-reduction technology, as shipowners across the sector continue to invest in battery systems and shore power infrastructure to meet tightening environmental regulations.
