Babcock LGE, a Rosyth-based marine engineering business within Babcock International, has secured a contract with South Korea's Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) covering four 88,000-cubic-metre (cbm) very large gas carriers (VLGCs), strengthening its position in the global liquefied gas handling market. The vessels are being built for shipowner Oceonix. Babcock LGE and Samsung Heavy Industries will work closely throughout the engineering and delivery programme supporting construction of all four ships, with Babcock LGE aiming to establish a long-term relationship with Oceonix beyond delivery in 2029 to ensure the vessels' gas systems perform optimally in operation. Andrew Fitzgerald, Commercial Director for Babcock LGE, said the contract reflects the strength of the company's relationship with Samsung and confidence in its technology and team, adding that both parties look forward to building on the partnership and supporting future growth together. Babcock LGE said the award reinforces its position in the global VLGC market and continues its long-standing involvement in designing and delivering liquefied gas handling solutions for major shipyards and shipowners. Samsung Heavy Industries is currently developing multiple vessels and energy infrastructure assets, including a floating liquefied natural gas (FLNG) unit intended for use in the traditional territory of the Haisla Nation on Canada's West Coast.
