Chowgule and Company's Shipbuilding Division has signed a contract with Green Maritime Infrastructure (GMI) to construct two hydrogen-powered cargo vessels at its shipyard in Goa, India. The agreement was finalised during SMM Hamburg 2026, a major maritime industry event held in Germany. Each of the two vessels will have a capacity of 3,000 DWT and will run on hydrogen fuel-cell technology. The ships are intended to join GMI's expanding zero-emission fleet, supporting the company's push into low-carbon coastal shipping operations. Chowgule Shipyard described the deal as a step forward for sustainable coastal shipping and said the vessels reflect ongoing efforts within the maritime sector to adopt alternative fuel technologies as an option to conventional propulsion. The shipyard said it looks forward to delivering the vessels from Goa, positioning the project as part of a broader shift toward hydrogen-based solutions in commercial shipbuilding. No delivery timeline, financial terms, or additional technical specifications for the vessels were disclosed. The contract adds to a growing list of hydrogen and other alternative-fuel newbuild orders placed globally as shipowners and operators respond to tightening emissions regulations and decarbonisation targets across the maritime industry.
