The worldwide newbuilding orderbook stood at approximately 7,802 vessels totalling 501 million DWT at the end of August 2026, with 258 new orders placed during the month alone. China, South Korea and Japan remain the dominant players in global commercial shipbuilding capacity. The deal also arrives as India pursues a new shipbuilding strategy aimed at capturing a share of international orders. Analysts suggest that if Indian yards can deliver competitive pricing, reliable delivery schedules, quality construction, modern technology, alternative-fuel capability and strong after-sales support, the country could benefit from the current wave of global newbuilding demand, though converting planned capacity into actual orders remains a challenge.
