HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering (HD KSOE), a subsidiary of HD Hyundai, has introduced a design for a 15,000 TEU nuclear-powered container ship utilizing Small Modular Reactor (SMR) technology. The design has received Approval in Principle from the American Bureau of Shipping, confirming its technical feasibility. It was presented at the New Nuclear for Maritime Houston Summit on 12 Feb 2025. The vessel eliminates traditional engine exhaust systems and fuel
tanks, increasing cargo space and operational efficiency. Safety is enhanced through a double-tank marine radiation shield made of stainless steel and light water. The propulsion system is based on supercritical CO2 technology developed in partnership with Baker Hughes. HD Hyundai is collaborating with classification societies and regulators to establish safety protocols for commercial nuclear vessels, including emergency scenarios. This initiative aligns with global efforts to reduce shipping’s carbon footprint, which accounts for about 3% of global emissions. HD KSOE aims to build the first nuclear-powered vessel by 2030, leveraging its partnership with TerraPower on next-generation SMR technology. The company also emphasizes the need for new training and certification for crews to operate these advanced vessels safely. This development marks a significant step toward sustainable maritime shipping and reflects HD Hyundai’s commitment to innovation and decarbonization in the industry.
