Seapeak has placed an order for three 174,000-cbm X-DF LNG carriers at Samsung Heavy Industries, each priced at $252 million. The vessels are set for delivery in the first half of 2029 and will be chartered to Woodside Energy on a 10-year fixed term with an option to
extend for five years. This commitment reflects current market conditions, including high JKM prices near USD 18/MMBtu and reduced output at Freeport LNG. Woodside aims to secure dedicated shipping capacity amid shifting Pacific and Atlantic LNG trade flows caused by regional supply disruptions and geopolitical factors. For Seapeak, the long-term charter rates of $80,000–$90,000 per day justify the investment, marking a strong return compared to previous lower rates. The order contributes to the robust Korean shipbuilding market, which is projected to reach $38.8 billion in new orders in 2026, driven largely by LNG carrier demand.
