AYK Energy Ltd. announced the successful completion of sea trials for Svitzer Balder, the world's first battery-methanol harbour tug. Built by Uzmar Shipyard in Türkiye, Svitzer Balder is the most powerful electric escort tug globally, designed for harbour and near-open ocean
operations. The vessel is scheduled for delivery to the Port of Gothenburg, Sweden, where it will conduct over 90% of towing and docking tasks in zero-emission mode using its battery-electric propulsion system. AYK managed the sea trials and supplied an ABS-certified AriesA 6MWh battery system with an expected service life of around 10 years. This marks the fifth Svitzer tug equipped with AYK battery technology. The project highlights advancements in battery technology and maritime electrification, supporting efforts toward zero-emission shipping.
