Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) has acquired a 51% controlling stake in Colombo Dockyard PLC (CDPLC) for USD 26.8 million, marking the first international shipyard acquisition by an Indian firm. The acquisition, executed through primary share subscriptions and secondary purchases from Japan’s Onomichi Dockyard, places Sri Lanka’s largest shipyard under MDL's control, a subsidiary of the Indian Ministry
of Defence. The Colombo facility features four dry docks with a maximum vessel capacity of 125,000 deadweight tonnes, strategically located at the East-West mainline shipping lane. Following the acquisition, MDL's Chairman and Managing Director, Captain Jagmohan (Retd.), became Non-Executive Chairman of CDPLC on 7 Apr 2026. MDL nominees joined the board, while CDPLC's Managing Director Thimira Godakumbura continues to lead operations. The acquisition aligns with India's Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision 2047 and aims to enhance regional maritime capabilities. Commercial activity has begun, including a Memorandum of Understanding with the Dredging Corporation of India Limited and coordination with the Shipping Corporation of India. The keel laying for Yard No. 0263 took place on 1 Apr 2026.
