Wuhu Shipyard has officially established Wuchuan (Nantong) Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. in Rugao, Jiangsu, marking the reactivation of the long-idle Rongsheng Heavy Industries shipyard. By leasing Rongsheng's large dry docks through a newly registered company, Wuhu Shipyard is making a major leap into the construction of very large crude carriers (VLCCs) and other large vessels such as Newcastlemax and potentially VLOCs. The company has begun procurement for significant gantry cranes, signaling a structural upgrade of the facility. Notably, Navios Maritime Partners, led by Angeliki Frangou, has reportedly ordered four VLCCs from Wuhu Shipyard, with deliveries expected from the second half of 2028. This move marks Wuhu Shipyard's first entry into the VLCC market and reflects a broader shift in China's shipbuilding strategy, focusing on capacity recycling and modular expansion. The revival of Rongsheng's docks is expected to reactivate local supply chains and reshape the competitive landscape for large ship construction in China and beyond.
