Port of Tauranga, New Zealand’s largest and busiest port, has signed an agreement with UZMAR Shipyards of Türkiye to construct a new 32-metre hybrid advanced rotortug. The vessel will be the port’s first hybrid tug and is expected to enhance operational efficiency, safety, and environmental sustainability. According to Port of Tauranga Chief Executive Leonard Sampson, the hybrid technology will reduce reliance on diesel and lower greenhouse gas emissions. UZMAR Shipyards was chosen after an international search, due to its experience in building hybrid tugs. The new vessel will replace the port’s oldest tug, Sir Robert, and join the existing tugs Tai Pari and Tai Timu. Delivery is anticipated for mid-2027, with some wharf and infrastructure upgrades planned at Mount Maunganui to accommodate the new tug.
