Dynacom Tankers, led by prominent Greek shipowner George Prokopiou, has reportedly expanded its fleet with a substantial new order in China. Market sources indicate that Dynacom has placed an order for six 155,000-dwt Suezmax tankers with New Times Shipbuilding (NTS), continuing its aggressive newbuilding campaign. The new tankers are expected to be equipped with scrubbers and delivered by 2028.
New Times Shipbuilding has emerged as a preferred partner for Dynacom, evidenced by 12 Suezmax tankers already under construction for the company at this shipyard. While Dynacom has not officially commented on the transaction, the move is seen as part of Prokopiou's strategy to strengthen his group's market presence, adding to the growing Greek order book that now counts over 600 vessels.
Besides expanding its newbuilding program, Dynacom has been active in acquiring secondhand vessels. This year, they purchased three 2009-built Suezmax tankers previously owned by Teekay Tankers. Currently, Dynacom manages a fleet of 67 operational tankers, with 53 more under construction.
The order with NTS stands out, as Greek maritime companies have been leaning towards South Korean shipbuilders in response to certain U.S. port fee plans. However, changing perceptions around these fees have potentially shifted market interest back to Chinese yards. This is supported by recent activities from other Greek owners, like Polembros Shipping, which secured deals in China, indicating a possible resurgence in Sino-Greek shipbuilding relations.
