Evergreen Sets Record Price for Megamax Orders In a significant move within the shipping industry, Taiwan's Evergreen Marine Corporation has set a new world record for containership prices. The company has contracted for the construction of eleven LNG dual-fuel ships, each with a capacity of 24,000 twenty-foot equivalent units (teu). These orders are split between shipbuilders in South Korea and China. South Korea's Hanwha Ocean is responsible for six of these vessels, each costing $267.3 million, marking the most expensive container vessels ever built. CSSC Guangzhou Shipyard International (GSI) will construct the remaining ships. This price is a stark increase from similar models ordered in 2020, when each vessel cost $103 million less, highlighting the surge in newbuild prices during the lucrative shipping market of the 2020s. In comparison, Hapag-Lloyd had agreed to pay $164 million per vessel for a similar series of ships in late 2020.
