ESL Shipping has announced the construction of a series of four next-generation fossil-free handysize vessels, marking a significant advancement in sustainable maritime transportation. The new 1A ice-class vessels, valued at approximately EUR 186 million, are designed to set a new standard in cargo capacity, technology, and environmental innovation. The company retains an option to expand the order with additional ships in the future.

The vessels are being constructed at China Merchants Jinling Shipyard (Nanjing) Co., Ltd., in Nanjing, China. They are scheduled to be delivered between the third quarter of 2027 and the first quarter of 2028. The ships will operate on green hydrogen-based e-methanol or biomethanol, enabling fully fossil-free operations and significantly reducing environmental impact.

ESL Shipping collaborated closely with Deltamarin Ltd., a leading Finnish ship designer, and the Swedish SSPA model test facility to develop the vessel design. Comprehensive model tests were conducted to ensure optimal performance and efficiency. Key European suppliers will provide advanced equipment, including battery hybrid powertrains and state-of-the-art cargo handling systems.These vessels aim to address growing customer demand for environmentally friendly cargo solutions while offering market-leading energy efficiency, innovative cargo space design, and reduced operating costs, positioning ESL Shipping at the forefront of sustainable shipping solutions.
