Evergreen Marine, a prominent Taiwanese container shipping company, has made a significant move towards decarbonizing its operations by ordering six 2,400 TEU methanol dual-fuel container ships in China. These Sub-Panamax vessels will be constructed by CSSC Huangpu Wenchong Shipbuilding Company Limited, a division of China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC). Evergreen disclosed this transaction in a stock exchange filing on June 7, 2024.

 The purchase price for each vessel ranges between $52-58 million, resulting in a total transaction value of $312-348 million. Notably, this order was placed on behalf of Italia Marittima S.p.A. (ITS), an Evergreen Marine subsidiary. This development follows Evergreen's previous investment in 24 methanol dual-fuel 16,000 TEU container ships last year. The construction contracts for these vessels were split between Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) and Nihon Shipyard, a collaboration between Japan Marine United Corporation (JMU) and Imabari Shipbuilding. Evergreen's strategic decisions underscore its commitment to sustainability and innovation in the maritime industry.
