In a strategic move to enhance its fleet, Hong Kong-based diversified shipowner Wah Kwong has ordered two additional Ultramax bulk carrier newbuilds from New Dayang Shipbuilding. This follows an initial contract signed in April, where Wah Kwong enlisted the shipbuilding division of state-run machinery manufacturer Sumec Group to construct two Crown 63 Plus design vessels. Although the financial details of both orders remain undisclosed, industry brokers estimate the cost of similar newbuilds in China to be around $34 million each.

Under Sumec's management since 2018, New Dayang Shipbuilding has previously delivered four Ultramax vessels to Wah Kwong, with deliveries occurring between August 2023 and January 2024. Notably, this initial batch included the Eastern Venture, recognized as the world’s first newbuild certified with Bureau Veritas’ Smart EnE1 notation, which acknowledges its intelligent energy efficiency features.Wah Kwong currently operates a fleet of over 30 ships, with more than 70 additional vessels under its management.
