Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) has placed a new order worth approximately $1.35 billion with Zhoushan Changhong International for six 21,700 TEU LNG dual-fuel ultra-large container ships, according to shipbroking sources. The unit price is estimated at around $225 million, with delivery expected in June 2029. The order is the fourth new shipbuilding collaboration between MSC and Zhoushan Changhong International, following earlier contracts for 11,500 TEU, 10,300 TEU and 19,000 TEU LNG dual-fuel vessels. The 21,700 TEU class represents the largest and most advanced container ship type currently under construction at the yard, and the largest class of container vessels being built in Zhejiang Province. The partnership began in late 2022 with an order for ten 11,500 TEU vessels, fully delivered by 9 Apr 2026. A second contract for ten 10,300 TEU ships, worth about $1.3 billion, followed in August 2023, with six of the ten already delivered as of 17 Sep 2026; the latest, MSC Clelia X, was handed over 324 days ahead of schedule. A third order for twelve 19,000 TEU vessels was signed in August 2024, with construction of the first ship starting on 12 Nov 2025. A fourth-project order for 4+2+2 21,700 TEU ships was signed in February 2025, followed by an additional 1+1 order reported in July 2025. MSC has now ordered more than 40 large container vessels from Zhoushan Changhong International, ranging from 10,300 TEU to 21,700 TEU, with deliveries extending to 2029. MSC operates a fleet exceeding 7.3 million TEU with about 150 vessels on order, mostly built at Chinese yards including Hengli Heavy Industries, Jiangsu Hantong Ship Heavy Industry and Jinglu Shipyard.
