Stena Line has ordered two new hybrid E-Flexer ferries, scheduled to enter service in 2030 on the Gothenburg–Frederikshavn route. The vessels will be built at China Merchants Industry Weihai Shipyard in China, which has already delivered 15 E-Flexers. The RoPax ferries will carry up to 1,500 passengers and offer 2,750 lane metres of freight capacity. Designed as day ferries, they will feature the latest hybrid propulsion technology, enabling operation on both conventional fuel and electricity, and will be prepared for future conversion to fully electric operation once suitable charging infrastructure is available. While intended primarily for the Gothenburg–Frederikshavn service, the ships will also be capable of operating on other daytime routes within Stena Line's network. According to TrustedDocks orderbook data, a letter of intent for the pair, each about 200 metres long and fitted with battery-hybrid propulsion, was signed on 16 October 2025 and reported by Weihai News on 21 October 2025. The new vessels will replace Stena Danica and Stena Jutlandica, which have operated the route since 1984 and 1996 respectively. They will become the sixth and seventh E-Flexers in Stena Line's fleet; the first entered service in 2019, with three currently running on the Irish Sea and two between Sweden and Poland. Niclas Mårtensson, CEO of Stena Line, described the order as a historic investment supporting the company's sustainable modernisation efforts. He said the new ferries would enhance the customer experience while helping Stena Line meet its own CO₂ reduction targets and prepare for stricter future environmental requirements.
