Marseille-based liner Marfret has signed for two 480 teu feeder containerships at China's Hubei Guangji Green Energy Shipbuilding, adding another overseas order to the book of the recently commissioned Yangtze River yard. Pricing and delivery dates have not been disclosed. The vessels will be designed by Shanghai Merchant Ship Design and Research Institute (SDARI) and classed with Bureau Veritas, with propulsion equipment supplied by CSSC Power's Zhenjiang operation. The hull form has been optimised to reduce fuel consumption. The contract is Guangji's fourth international order this year, following deals with owners in Dubai, Norway and Singapore. The state-backed yard at Wuxue only recently entered commercial production but has rapidly expanded its export portfolio, including a two-plus-four 1,300 teu feeder order from Arne Blystad-backed Songa Box in July, a three-plus-three 930 teu feeder deal with Dubai's Emarat Maritime, and a recent order from Singapore's Wealth Holdings for two firm 25,000 dwt multipurpose vessels plus options. Guangji is being developed through an RMB3.5bn ($488m) investment, with 10 building slipways and planned annual output of up to 1m dwt. Marfret's previous newbuilding move involved acquiring the third hull in a four-ship Reederei Nord series at Guangzhou Wenchong Shipyard for $30m. That 1,900 teu vessel, Durande, was delivered in March 2025 and has since joined Marfret's chartering activities.
