Mitsui OSK Lines (MOL), Japan's largest shipowner, has announced a significant expansion of its wind propulsion initiatives, reflecting its confidence in its self-developed Wind Challenger hard sail technology. The company disclosed plans to install the Wind Challenger on an additional seven dry bulk and multipurpose (MPP) carriers. MOL is also exploring the possibility of integrating Anemoi’s Rotorsail technology on some of these vessels in conjunction with the Wind Challenger system.

This expansion builds on MOL’s existing fleet, which includes four ships already equipped with various forms of wind propulsion technology. The Wind Challenger, developed in collaboration with Oshima Shipbuilding, represents MOL’s commitment to sustainable maritime solutions. Additionally, MOL will equip an MPP vessel, slated for delivery next year, with EconoWind’s Ventifoils, further diversifying its wind propulsion capabilities. 

MOL's strategic plan aims to launch 25 vessels with Wind Challengers by 2030 and 80 vessels by 2035. This ambitious initiative positions MOL as a leading investor in wind propulsion technology within the global maritime industry.
