China's first ammonia-dual-fuel LPG/liquid-ammonia carriers, André M and GAS CORAL, were named on 16 September in a ceremony marking a milestone for the country's gas-carrier sector. The 25,000-m3 vessels were designed by Shanghai Ship Research and Design Institute and built by CSSC Huangpu Wenchong Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. for Tianjin Southwest Shipping. Upon delivery, André M will become China's first ammonia-fueled gas carrier classed by CCS, representing a breakthrough for domestic medium-size gas carriers in ammonia-fuel application. The ships measure 159.9 m in length, 26.5 m in breadth and 16.17 m in depth, and are equipped with three independent Type-A cargo tanks and two deck-mounted fuel tanks, with a design temperature as low as minus 50 degrees Celsius. They can carry multiple liquefied-gas cargoes including LPG and liquid ammonia, hold the Ready-for-ammonia-fueling class notation, and comply with CCS Ice Class B requirements and Phase III of the Energy Efficiency Design Index. The vessels are powered by a CSSC-developed WinGD 6X52DF-A ammonia-dual-fuel low-speed main engine, allowing switching between ammonia and diesel modes. Ammonia-fuel operation produces near-zero carbon dioxide emissions, and the ships achieve a 61 percent reduction in lifecycle carbon emissions compared with mainstream LNG-dual-fuel ships currently in service. Because ammonia is highly toxic and flammable, the project posed technical and safety-control challenges during construction and commissioning, including ammonia-fuel bunkering and system integration. The construction team resolved these issues through several technological innovations, positioning the project as a demonstration case for commercial adoption of ammonia-fueled ships.
