Bayraktar Shipping Group signed a contract on 2 September in Hamburg for a series of 1,800 TEU container feeder newbuilding vessels with China Merchants Shipbuilding Industry Group Wuhan Qingshan Shipyard Co., Ltd. The signing ceremony brought together representatives of both companies along with Bayraktar family members and colleagues, marking what the company described as a milestone in its fleet renewal programme. The new vessels are designed to be fuel-efficient and built to meet anticipated future regulatory requirements in the feeder container trade, rather than current standards alone. Bayraktar Shipping Group said the order reflects confidence in the long-term fundamentals of the feeder container sector and represents a deliberate investment aimed at positioning the fleet for where the market and environmental rules are heading. Erhan Bayraktar, who represented the company at the signing, framed the deal as part of a generational transition within the family-run shipping group, noting that the newbuildings were contracted with the involvement of the next generation of the family. He thanked teams at China Merchants Shipbuilding Industry Group and Wuhan Qingshan Shipyard, as well as Bayraktar staff involved in the project. The vessels will now move through design and construction phases ahead of their first voyages, with no delivery timeline disclosed. The order adds to a wave of feeder-size newbuilding activity among owners seeking modern tonnage suited to evolving trade patterns and emissions regulations.
