Finnish marine propulsion specialist Steerprop has been selected to supply the complete main propulsion package for a new icebreaker being built for the Swedish Maritime Administration (SMA) by HD Hyundai Heavy Industries in Ulsan, South Korea. The contract marks Steerprop's first project with both the Swedish Maritime Administration and HD Hyundai Heavy Industries. The vessel will be fitted with two Steerprop Contra-Rotating Propellers (CRP) azimuth propulsors alongside one pulling azimuth propulsor. The two Steerprop SP 260 CRP ARC LM units, rated at 7,100 kW each, are the most powerful CRP units the company has produced, while a bow-mounted 7,000 kW Steerprop SP 130 PULL ARC LM pulling azimuth propulsor completes the push-pull configuration. Together, the system is designed to deliver strong thrust, precise maneuverability and enhanced icebreaking capability. Measuring 126 meters in length and built to Polar Class 4 (PC4), the icebreaker will escort commercial vessels through challenging Baltic ice conditions to maintain safe winter navigation. The push-pull CRP arrangement concentrates thrust into a narrow, powerful flow, allowing the vessel to cut wider channels through heavy ice while improving propulsion efficiency and reducing resistance for escorted ships. Steerprop said the propulsion package reflects the scalability of its established CRP technology and its experience with high ice-class vessels for Arctic operations. Delivery of the propulsion equipment is scheduled for the second quarter of 2028.
