Greek shipowner Carlova Maritime has ordered an approximately 82,000-dwt Kamsarmax bulk carrier at China's Hengli Heavy Industries, marking its expansion into the dry bulk newbuilding segment. The vessel is scheduled for delivery in 2027, according to market sources. The order follows Carlova's earlier placement this year of a 114,000-dwt Aframax tanker at the same yard, due for delivery in the second quarter of 2028. With the Kamsarmax order, Carlova has now engaged Hengli across two major vessel segments, deepening its relationship with the Chinese builder. Carlova Maritime, led by Anthony Inglessis, emerged from the restructuring of the historic Samos Steamship interests and continues the shipping tradition of the Inglessis family, whose maritime history spans around 150 years. Its current fleet of 13 vessels — nine tankers and four bulk carriers — is entirely Japanese-built, reflecting the family's long-standing ties to Japanese shipyards. However, Carlova's newbuilding programme signals a shift in yard strategy, now including two 300,000-dwt VLCCs at Hanwha Ocean in South Korea alongside the Aframax and Kamsarmax orders at Hengli. The moves indicate a broader diversification away from Japanese yards toward South Korean and Chinese shipbuilders, and reflect Hengli's growing presence among established Greek shipowners.
