General Dynamics NASSCO delivered the USNS Hector A. Cafferata Jr. (ESB 8) to the U.S. Navy on Tuesday, marking the completion of the Expeditionary Sea Base (ESB) program. The delivery ceremony concluded a construction effort spanning design, fabrication and sea trials for the vessel, the last of its class to be built under the program. The Expeditionary Sea Base class was developed to provide the Navy with a flexible, sea-based platform supporting a range of missions, including special operations, mine countermeasures, humanitarian assistance
and logistics support. Each ship in the class was built to allow rapid reconfiguration for different mission sets while operating independently of shore infrastructure. With the delivery of ESB 8, NASSCO's production line for the ESB program comes to a close after supporting the design and construction of multiple vessels in the class over several years. The shipyard credited the program's completion to the work of thousands of employees involved across engineering, production and testing phases. According to TrustedDocks orderbook data, the vessel was ordered by the U.S. Government in June 2019 and carries hull number 548, with a scheduled delivery window beginning in August 2026. The USNS Hector A. Cafferata Jr. will now enter service with the Navy, joining its sister ships in supporting expeditionary operations worldwide. NASSCO said the vessel's entry into the fleet represents the culmination of the ESB program while noting that the ship's operational life, and the broader impact of the workforce that built it, is only beginning.
