India and Germany are close to finalising a Rs 90,000 crore (over €8 billion) deal for six advanced Type-214 conventional submarines under the Project-75I programme. German Ambassador to India Philipp Ackermann indicated the agreement could be signed as early as next month. The submarines will be built in India through a partnership between Germany's thyssenkrupp Marine Systems and India's Mazagon Dock Ltd, combining indigenous construction with technology transfer. The Type-214 submarines feature Air Independent Propulsion technology, allowing them to remain submerged for up to two weeks, enhancing stealth and endurance for long-range underwater missions. The deal is expected to increase local content in the vessels to 60 percent, supporting India's naval modernisation efforts by replacing ageing submarines with next-generation platforms. Project-75I is a significant step in strengthening India’s submarine fleet and marks a deepening of defence cooperation between India and Germany. The programme reflects a shift towards substantive joint production and technology partnerships, securing a long-term order pipeline for Mazagon Dock’s Mumbai facility and expanding bilateral defence industrial ties.
