Three leading Greek shipowners have placed orders for eight Very Large Ammonia Carriers (VLACs) at Hengli Heavy Industry shipyard in Dalian, China. These vessels represent some of the largest ammonia carriers currently on order globally. The orders highlight growing interest in ammonia as both a critical chemical feedstock and
a promising zero-carbon marine fuel. Ammonia is increasingly viewed as a key component in the maritime industry's efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and transition to greener energy sources. Hengli Heavy Industry, a major Chinese shipbuilder, will construct these carriers, reflecting China's expanding role in building advanced vessels for alternative fuels. The move by Greek shipowners aligns with broader trends in shipping, where ammonia and other alternative fuels are gaining traction amid tightening environmental regulations. This development underscores the maritime sector's commitment to decarbonization and the strategic importance of ammonia transport infrastructure in supporting future energy transition goals.
