Hong Kong-based KC Maritime has signed a contract to build two 63,500-dwt Ultramax bulk carriers at Jiangsu SOHO Innovation & Technology Shipbuilding. The agreement was finalized on 13 July 2026, with senior representatives from both companies present at the signing ceremony. The new vessels will have a single-engine, single-screw configuration, measuring 199.9 metres in length and 32.26 metres in beam. They are designed to achieve a service speed of 13.5 knots and a maximum endurance of 20,000 nautical miles. KC Maritime, part of the Chellaram Group, has significant experience operating Ultramax bulk carriers in the 63,000-dwt class, and this order marks a continuation of its fleet renewal and expansion strategy. Jiangsu SOHO Innovation & Technology Shipbuilding has now secured orders for 37 vessels of this 63,500-dwt series since its restructuring. The deal reflects ongoing investment in the 63,000–65,000-dwt segment, with several recent projects involving major players such as Pacific Basin and ITOCHU Corporation. Chinese shipyards are increasing their market share in this segment, traditionally dominated by Japanese builders, by offering standardized designs and competitive pricing that appeal to international owners.
