Italian shipping group Grimaldi has placed orders for 27 new ships valued at €2.5 billion, including two additional Pure Car and Truck Carrier (PCTC) vessels. Some of these ships are currently under construction at Chinese shipyards. CEO Emanuele Grimaldi emphasized the importance of investing in vessels that
are at least 50% more efficient and produce half the emissions, aiming to reduce fuel consumption by approximately 700,000 tons and save between €350 million and €400 million. He highlighted the challenges shipowners face in choosing between alternative fuels such as biofuels, methanol, ammonia, and hydrogen amid regulatory uncertainty. Grimaldi called for clear global regulations to support sustainable investments and noted that electricity is viable mainly for short voyages. The company is also considering hybrid ships for routes like Brindisi-Igoumenitsa. The initiative aligns with broader efforts to accelerate maritime decarbonization under international frameworks.
