The 2012-built bulk carrier GUANG QI DE ER TA has been converted into a 3,607 TEU containership at Zhoushan Xinya Shipyard, completing the largest bulker-to-boxship conversion to date. The vessel, originally an 80,000 DWT bulk carrier, underwent extensive modifications including the reconstruction of its seven dry bulk cargo holds into 13 container holds, installation of a new container lashing system, and alterations to the deck structure, cargo layout, ship systems, and accommodation block. China Classification Society confirmed this as the world’s first major conversion of an 80,000 DWT bulk carrier into a containership of this size. The project addresses strong demand in the feeder and mid-sized containership markets, where available tonnage is limited and newbuilding slots are constrained. This conversion highlights China's growing capabilities in ship repair, conversion, and life-cycle engineering.
