China’s Jiangnan Shipyard has delivered Ivy Cove, the world’s largest very large ammonia carrier (VLAC) with a capacity of 93,000 cubic metres. The vessel is the first of a six-ship order placed in 2023 by Singaporean shipowner Eastern Pacific Shipping (EPS). This delivery highlights Jiangnan’s advanced technical capabilities in building specialised liquefied gas carriers, addressing the engineering challenges posed by ammonia’s high density and corrosive nature. Ammonia is considered a green fuel as it emits no carbon dioxide when burned and is an effective medium for transporting hydrogen. Following the initial order, EPS signed a contract in January for two additional 90,000-cubic-metre VLACs with deliveries set for 2028. The delivery underscores China’s growing dominance in global shipbuilding, particularly in high-tech gas carriers, an area traditionally led by Korean shipyards.
