Cochin Shipyard is constructing two battery-electric harbour tugs for Polestar Maritime under Phase 1 of India's Green Tug Transition Programme (GTTP), to operate at Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA). ABB is supplying the power, propulsion, automation, and energy management systems for the vessels. The GTTP aims to transform India's
harbour tug fleet between 2024 and 2040, starting with battery-electric tugs and paving the way for hybrid, methanol, and green hydrogen technologies. This project supports JNPA's Green Port ambitions and is expected to drive investments of around ₹1,000 crore in green tug construction during the initial phase. Cochin Shipyard is among the first Indian shipbuilders to deliver operational low-emission vessels and is expanding its expertise across alternative fuel segments, including hydrogen-powered vessels. The initiative reflects India's growing focus on maritime decarbonization and the potential for wider adoption of electric and alternative-fuel vessels in the coastal and port ecosystem.
