Seaspan successfully delivered SEASPAN YANGTZE, the lead vessel in its 10K series methanol dual-fuel retrofit programme, on 2 Jun 2026. The retrofit, completed by Shanghai COSCO Shipping Heavy Industry, cost around USD 24 million per vessel and took approximately 85–86 days in yard. The
conversion involved transforming part of the cargo hold into a 9,098.8 cubic metre methanol storage tank and upgrading the main engine for methanol dual-fuel capability, along with integrating fuel, safety, control, and automation systems. Post-conversion, SEASPAN YANGTZE’s Energy Efficiency Existing Ship Index (EEXI) is about 55% lower than the Phase 0 requirement, indicating significant energy efficiency improvements. The project also demonstrated ship-to-ship methanol bunkering of around 3,000 tonnes. Seaspan emphasizes that such retrofits are comprehensive engineering conversions aimed at future-proofing fleets for evolving fuel, regulatory, and customer demands.
