WinGD has received the world’s first order for ethanol-fuelled main engines for ocean-going ships, supplying two 6X82DF-M/E engines for Shandong Shipping’s 325,000 DWT ore carriers. The vessels will be constructed by Beihai Shipbuilding and operate under a long-term charter for Vale. This order represents a significant milestone as the project advances from framework agreements and cargo commitments to confirmed propulsion selection. It also marks ethanol’s entry into commercial use in deep-sea bulk shipping as a viable decarbonisation option. The adoption of ethanol-fuelled engines highlights ongoing efforts in the maritime industry to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from large ocean-going vessels.
