LMG Marin and navalue GmbH have been selected to design NorthLink’s next generation Freight Flex RoPax vessels for the Aberdeen–Kirkwall–Lerwick routes. Two new 140-metre ships will replace the current roro vessels Helliar and Hildasay, enhancing capacity and flexibility with increased freight space and accommodation
for up to 200 passengers during peak periods. The vessels will feature higher operating speeds, improved schedule resilience, and better maneuverability suited to North Sea conditions. They will also incorporate a battery-hybrid, dual-fuel methanol propulsion system to support low-carbon operations as green methanol becomes available. The collaboration between LMG Marin and navalue combines ferry design expertise and engineering knowledge to deliver vessels that will strengthen island supply chains and support the Northern Isles for decades. The project involves close cooperation with Caledonian Maritime Assets, GSI, and NorthLink Ferries.
