The Swedish Maritime Administration has contracted HD Hyundai Heavy Industries to build a new icebreaker, scheduled for the 2029–2030 icebreaking season. The vessel will be larger and more capable than Sweden’s current icebreakers, which were constructed in the 1970s and 1980s and are
nearing the end of their operational lifespan. Developed by Railotech in cooperation with the Swedish Maritime Administration and the Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency, the design incorporates experience from existing Swedish and Finnish icebreakers, including the 2016-built Polaris. The new icebreaker will feature advanced icebreaking capabilities, energy efficiency, and readiness for renewable methanol fuel, with an expected service life of 50 years. Railotech is recognized as a leading icebreaker designer, having contributed to 59 vessels built and 26 more under construction or planned worldwide since 2005.
