On 17 Apr 2026, SunRui Environment, part of CSSC’s 725 Research Institute, unveiled the world’s largest marine wind-assisted propulsion system (WAPS) after completing full-scale land-based testing. The rotor sail measures 5 meters in diameter and 35 meters in height, utilizing the Magnus effect to harness wind energy and
provide additional thrust. The system can deliver maximum thrust exceeding 355 kN and is equipped with an intelligent control system that adjusts to real-time wind and vessel conditions for optimized performance and safety. It is reported to enable fuel savings of 5% to 25% for large oceangoing ships, contributing to significant carbon emission reductions. Certification was presented by ABS, BV, CCS, and DNV at the launch, alongside a cooperation agreement with Dalian Haineng to promote commercialization. This development aligns with IMO and EU ETS decarbonization goals and highlights China's growing role in marine green technology.
