Caledonian Maritime Assets Limited (CMAL) has awarded a contract to Guangzhou Shipyard International Co. Limited (GSI) for the construction of two new freight flex vessels. The announcement follows a 10-day standstill period after a competitive tender process, which evaluated shipyards based on their facilities, capacities, and project capabilities. The new vessels will replace the MVs Helliar and Hildasay on the Aberdeen to Kirkwall/Lerwick route, offering improved freight capacity, higher operating speeds, and the ability to carry 200 passengers on each ship. Transport Secretary Fiona Hyslop thanked all involved parties, including CMAL and NorthLink Ferries, and expressed anticipation for the vessel replacement project's progress.
