Swedish operator AtoB@C Shipping, a subsidiary of ESL Shipping, has received the new hybrid multi-purpose vessel Astramar from India's Chowgule and Company shipyard. The Lloyd’s Register-classed Astramar is the 10th ship in a 12-vessel series of 5,350-dwt plug-in hybrid carriers designed for a variety of cargoes including bulk, breakbulk, steel products, forest goods, fertilizers, and project cargo. Equipped with a 1MWh energy storage system, Astramar can operate fully electric for up to two hours, aiding operations in emission-restricted ports. The batteries can be charged by shore power or onboard generators, and an emergency function ensures the vessel can safely reach port if the main engine fails. The vessel series, designed by SMB Naval Architects, is part of AtoB@C Shipping’s ongoing fleet modernization and emissions reduction program, with deliveries having started in 2024.
