China’s New Times Shipbuilding has delivered its first 50,000-dwt IMO II chemical tanker equipped with wind-assisted propulsion sails. The vessel features three suction wing sails (eSAIL®️) supplied by bound4blue, each measuring about 25 meters high and 4.5 meters wide, and weighing approximately 45 tonnes. The sails, which use fans to create suction and generate extra thrust from wind, were installed during the shipbuilding process for the first time at this yard. The wind-assisted system aims to enhance energy efficiency and reduce fuel consumption and emissions.
