French shipping giant CMA CGM has signed a landmark contract with Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL) for the construction of six 1,700-TEU LNG dual-fuel container ships. Valued at around USD 350–360 million, this marks the first time a leading global liner has ordered LNG-powered container vessels to be built in India, representing a significant milestone for the country's shipbuilding sector. The ships, to be constructed at CSL's Kerala facilities, are scheduled for delivery starting in 2029, with all six planned to sail under the Indian flag. This move aligns with India's ambitions to expand its maritime industry and strengthen its national fleet. CMA CGM is also increasing its Indian workforce and has launched an R&D hub in the country, underlining its long-term commitment to the region.
