Russian authorities have unveiled ambitious new plans to accelerate the development of the Northern Sea Route (NSR), aiming to establish a major trans-Arctic transport corridor by 2035. Deputy Prime Minister Yuri Trutnev detailed that Russia will build 10 additional icebreakers and 46 salvage vessels, alongside three new rescue fleet bases along the NSR. These efforts are part of President Vladimir Putin’s strategy to support year-round Arctic navigation and increase shipping traffic. State corporation Rosatom, which oversees the NSR, currently operates eight nuclear icebreakers, including the Project 22220 class vessels such as Arktika, Sibir, Ural, and the upcoming Yakutiya. Construction is also underway for new vessels, including Chukota, Leningrad, and Stalingrad. The shipbuilding program is accompanied by a broader initiative involving 155 projects, including infrastructure modernization and cargo base development, to ensure the future viability and growth of the Arctic shipping lane.
