China Merchants Energy Shipping (CMES) has taken delivery of the New Explorer (Kaituo), the world’s first methanol dual-fuel, 'smart' Very Large Crude Carrier (VLCC). The vessel was built by CSSC Dalian Shipbuilding Industry Co., Ltd. (DSIC) in partnership with China Shipbuilding Trading Co., Ltd., and was delivered four months ahead of schedule. New Explorer features a methanol dual-fuel propulsion system, allowing flexible switching between conventional fuel and methanol, and meets IMO Tier III requirements for emissions. The vessel also boasts a multi-system intelligent ship platform, incorporating smart cargo operations designed to improve safety and operational efficiency. This delivery marks a significant step in tanker decarbonisation and signals a practical move towards alternative fuels and digital integration in the shipping industry. CMES plans to continue its fleet renewal with 15 additional tanker newbuilds scheduled for delivery between 2026 and 2028.
