COSCO, the world’s largest shipowner, has announced a landmark order for 87 newbuildings with shipyards under China State Shipbuilding Corp (CSSC), in a deal valued at over RMB50 billion (approximately $7.07 billion). The diverse order includes containerships, tankers, bulk carriers, and multipurpose vessels, and will be fulfilled by several leading CSSC facilities, such as Jiangnan Shipyard, Guangzhou Shipyard International, Wuchang Shipbuilding, Dalian Shipbuilding, Beihai Shipbuilding, and Chengxi Shipyard. The new vessels, commissioned for COSCO Shipping Lines, COSCO Shipping Bulk, COSCO Shipping Energy, COSCO Shipping Development, and COSCO Shipping Specialized Carriers, are expected to feature next-generation energy-efficient designs and advanced digital systems in line with international decarbonisation efforts. This significant expansion underscores COSCO’s commitment to modernising its fleet and securing supply chain resilience, building on recent investments including a $1.75 billion programme for 29 additional ships.
