At Marintec China 2025, the China Ship Design & Research Center (CSDC) unveiled the 'Polaris', the world’s first 10,000-deadweight-ton hydrogen-fuel multipurpose vessel. Powered by hydrogen fuel cells and featuring organic liquid hydrogen storage, Polaris boasts a 4,300 nautical mile range at 12.5 knots. The vessel, designed for the European market, achieves net-zero greenhouse gas emissions across its life cycle and offers increased cargo capacity over comparable ships. Incorporating advanced energy-saving technologies, Polaris is a significant step in zero-carbon ship development. During the event, CSDC also received Approval in Principle (AiP) certificates from six classification societies for eleven low-carbon ship designs, reinforcing China’s commitment to greener maritime transport.
