According to the Moscow Times, construction of Russian icebreakers has faced significant setbacks after the United States imposed sanctions on the Turkish Kuzey Star shipyard in early 2025. As a result, Rosmorport effectively canceled the contracts as early as July 2025. The project relied on critical components such as ABB's Azipod rudder thrusters and Wärtsilä diesel generators from Finland, making the completion of the ships impossible under current restrictions. The vessels were designed by the Russian Baltsudoproekt design office.
