HD Hyundai Heavy Industries has announced that artificial intelligence is driving a faster path to shipbuilding modernization in both South Korea and the United States. By combining Korea’s production expertise with U.S. digital platforms and computing power, the company aims to transform American shipyards from the ground up. Aerin Jungmin Lee, Hyundai’s AI strategy lead, emphasized that leveraging U.S. computing resources could speed up research and serve as a foundation for building smart shipyards. HD Hyundai is already collaborating with U.S. tech giants like Google, Palantir, and Anduril on AI-based production and defense projects. The company also rolled out an AI translation tool, supporting 12,000 workers from 17 countries across three shipyards. Later this year, Hyundai will launch a 'Shipbuilding AI Master Agent' to provide live diagnostics and retain technical know-how. Meanwhile, former President Donald Trump signed an executive order establishing the Genesis Mission, a federal initiative to expand AI use in government and science programs. Labor shortages and rising costs remain challenges, but Hyundai believes AI can help ease these pressures by reducing the need for specialized skills.
