Japan’s Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL) has announced plans to expand its LNG carrier fleet to approximately 150 vessels by the early 2030s. This move comes as the company anticipates a sustained increase in global LNG demand, spurred in part by policies promoting U.S. energy exports under Donald Trump. MOL currently operates just over 100 LNG carriers and is investing in new ships to meet long-term contracts and upcoming export projects. The expansion strategy also reflects broader industry trends, such as higher new-build prices, longer charter durations, and a growing emphasis on vessel efficiency. MOL is incorporating new technologies, including wind-assisted propulsion, and is exploring opportunities in floating storage and regasification units (FSRUs).
