French shipping giant CMA CGM has signed a Letter of Intent (LOI) with Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL) for the construction of six 1,700-TEU dual-fuel LNG feeder vessels, marking the first major global liner order at an Indian shipyard. The vessels, valued at approximately US$300 million, will be registered under the Indian flag and are scheduled for delivery between 2029 and 2031. This strategic partnership includes technical cooperation with HD Hyundai Heavy Industries, signaling a significant boost to India's maritime sector and its ambition to become a major shipbuilding hub. The move supports India's 'Make in India' initiative and is expected to attract more global orders, enhance local vendor ecosystems, and create employment opportunities for Indian seafarers.
