Today at the White House, the presidents of the United States and Finland signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) focused on icebreaker cooperation. The agreement marks the beginning of an industrial partnership between the two nations, aiming to revitalize American and Western icebreaker fleets. The U.S. Coast Guard will now lead the next phase, working with Davie Defense and Helsinki Shipyard to define requirements and finalize design and build plans. The partnership plans to deliver five Arctic Security Cutters by 2028, leveraging proven designs and shipbuilding expertise from Canada, Finland, and the U.S. The program represents a $1 billion investment in the U.S., expected to create thousands of jobs and expand domestic shipbuilding capacity.
